Carnival in the Sky 2026

What a beautiful day celebrating art, culture, and collaboration at the Opening Ceremony of Carnival in the Sky – A China & Trinidad & Tobago Kite Flying Festival 2026 on Saturday 28 March.

I was honoured to speak at the ceremony as a Director of The Art Society of Trinidad and Tobago and also as a visual artist who created one of the kites now on display. It was especially meaningful to experience this project from both perspectives—supporting the opportunity for artists, and being part of the creative process myself.

My kite, titled “Celebration,” was inspired by a special moment of cultural alignment—Carnival Tuesday in Trinidad & Tobago coinciding with China’s Year of the Fire Horse. The design brings together symbolic elements from both cultures, celebrating friendship, creativity, and shared traditions.

It was also a joy to collaborate with fellow Art Society member @omaliart868, who translated my painting into the final kite design. We actually met for the first time through this project, which is a lovely reminder of how creative collaborations can bring people together in unexpected ways.

One of the most special moments of the day, however, was flying kites with my sons. Watching them run across the field with the kites in the sky was pure joy and a memory I will cherish.

Grateful to the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Trinidad and Tobago, in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture and Community Development and the National Carnival Commission of Trinidad and Tobago, for bringing this beautiful and meaningful initiative to life.

The kites will be exhibited at The Art Society of Trinidad & Tobago from April 1–11.
